The Sherpa Steps

What is «The Sherpa Steps»?

It is a staircase consisting of approximately 1200 stone steps. It starts at the road Fløyvegen, and ends at the Cable Car top station, 421 meters above sea level. The steps were built in 2017-2018 by experienced Sherpas from Nepal, therefore the name.

How do you find the starting point of the Sherpa steps?

By car: If you arrive by car, you can park at Tromsø Kommune’s parking at Elvestrand Cemetery. You drive past Tromsø Lodge & Camping and TUIL Arena in Tromsdalen. From here it is about 1,6 km walk to the starting point in Fløyvegen. Here is a map (MAP) of the area.

By bus: There are several possibilities if you arrive by bus. Either you can take bus no. 20, 24 or 28 from the Tromsø bridge, and from there follow the green signs marked by «Sherpatrappa» or «Fløya via Aksla». You can also take bus no. 27 to either Eurospar supermarket or the Cable Car, or bus no. 26 to Fløyvegen. From the bus stops in Fløyvegen and the Cable Car it takes about 5 minutes to walk to the start of the Sherpa Steps.

By bicycle: By bicycle it takes approximately 10-12 minutes from the city center.

Walk the steps, and take the Cable Car down?

If you find it adventurous enough to just walk up the Sherpa steps, you can take the Cable Car down. One-way tickets are sold in Fjellstua Café.
